RETHINKING GROCERY STORES
The selected grocery store, Irma, holds a strong identity within Frederiksberg’s urban landscape. As part of the Danish Coop, Irma stands out not only for its iconic design and style but also for its commitment to sustainability and reducing the environmental footprint of the food industry. Alongside other stores, Irma actively participates in campaigns aimed at minimizing waste across the food cycle. This forward-thinking vision has the potential to set a positive benchmark in the market, encouraging other stores to adopt practices that contribute to a more sustainable future.

The final design celebrates a highly technical and functional system that, through its wooden truss skeleton, reveals a complex yet intuitive approach.
The grocery store extension creates opportunities to engage with and address one of the many contributors to the climate crisis. This closed-loop system not only aims to improve the store’s waste management but also actively supports the local community. The neighborhood can benefit from the heating generated by composting, fostering a new level of connection between spaces of consumption and production.
